Stars and Cars of the ‘50s

A reprieve from post-war austerity, the 1950s epitomized a time of glamour with its film icons and automobiles, which are admired and emulated to this day. Nothing said,"You've made it," quite like getting glammed up and going for a spin in your brand new automobile. The shapes and shades of cars were bright and exaggerated. Car design showed a fervent embrace of the future and a willingness to experiment with something new. Riviera Cocktail photographer Edward Quinn captured all the stars and idols from the worlds of film, music and the arts, as well as their admirers. Picasso and his Hispano Suiza, Brigitte Bardot in a Lancia and Onassis with his Thunderbird, and many more are featured with their motor toys. With a keen eye and playful exuberance, Quinn’s images define fifties style.

Riviera Cocktail

The French Riviera of the Fifties was an exciting place with much change in the air. Rock and roll and the bikini, existentialism and the atom bomb. Edward Quinn chronicled a playground that was influenced by international trends, but very much its own universe. On the Riviera every night was a party. His most memorable work included images of an unknown Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly's first meeting with Prince Rainier, and a precocious Brigitte Bardot. His exacting eye showcased Picasso, T.S. Eliot, and Gary Cooper. With a polished technique and great patience and charm, Quinn caught some of the post-war Riviera's most memorable moments. A tantalizing look at post-war leisure, sure to appeal to photography aficionados and culture buffs alike.

“It’s hard to imagine a modern equivalent of Edward Quinn’s photographs of celebrities holidaying on the French Riviera in the 50s.” Guardian, April 5, 2007. UK

The Riviera – where the stars came out to shine - and charismatic photographer Edward Quinn was there to capture them. (…) Edward Quinn died in 1997 but his photos live on. Their charm lies in the capturing of unpoised glamour.” Sunday Express, April 8, 2007. UK

“He introduced himself to Picasso in 1951, spawning a life-long friendship that allowed him to capture a seldom-seen private side of that very public genius.” Men’s Vogue online

A immortalarle, in bianco e nero, c’era Edward Quinn.” Corriere della Sera Magazine 15/2007. Italy

Switzerland
