Ceramics outside Madoura pottery. Vallauris 1953.

Outside the Madoura pottery in Vallauris, two large, ornately decorated vases stand in the sunlit foreground. Their curvaceous, hourglass forms are adorned with line drawings of female figures in a classical style. Resting on a simple wooden plank, they are part of a working yard where a row of small, white, bird-shaped ceramics is lined up on the ground. Rustic buildings with weathered stucco walls and terracotta-tiled roofs form the backdrop to the scene, captured in 1953.
