In the garden of his Cannes villa, La Californie, two of Pablo Picasso’s ceramic figures stand among lush foliage, 1956. One stylized musician stands playing a vertical wind instrument, while a second, seated musician is curled into a near-circular form beneath a palm. Picasso first created the designs from cut and painted plywood, which then served as models for the clay versions fired at the Madoura pottery in Vallauris and assembled on site.
