With his brow furrowed in concentration, he is deeply absorbed in the process of creating one of the so-called épreuves rincées (rinsed proofs). Holding a tool in his right hand, he applies dark ink to a rectangular printing plate while his left hand steadies the paper. Several other plates, some bearing intricate designs, are laid out on the large white sheet before him.
