Marlon Brando came to Bandol, a small town near Toulon, to visit his fiancée Josanne Mariani-Bérenger, daughter of a fisherman. Brando liked Bandol, as nobody really knew who he was. At first he refused to be photographed, but later he came out for a walk along the harbor and even smiled when he saw the photographer. Brando announced his engagement to the press, however the love affair ended abruptly when he returned to America. Bandol 1954.
This 1954 contact sheet documents Marlon Brando's visit to Bandol, where he met his fiancée, Josanne Mariani-Bérenger. The five strips of 35mm film reveal scenes shot from a car before focusing on the actor. Initially seen alone on a bench with a bicycle, Brando is later pictured with another man and finally with Mariani-Bérenger by a waterfront railing. Red grease pencil markings, including hearts and circles over certain frames, reveal the photographer's selections from the moments captured during their walk along the harbor.
