In the cluttered studio of his Villa La Californie in Cannes, Pablo Picasso and his lifelong friend Jaime Sabartés critically examine a portrait of Jacqueline, 1957. Picasso, in a light-colored polo shirt, stands beside the formally suited Sabartés, whose opinion he greatly valued. Sunlight from a large window illuminates the creative chaos of canvases and sculptures, casting long shadows of the two men. Their friendship began in 1899, when they met as young artists in a Barcelona café.
