Fence guests. Gypsies on the occasion of the yearly pilgrimage and festival of the Gypsies in honor of Saint Sara, Arènes des Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in 1953.

During the annual pilgrimage for Saint Sara in 1953, two Gypsy children are at a large wooden gate of the Arènes in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. An older, barefoot girl climbs the imposing structure, which is laced with barbed wire, to peer over the top. Below, a much smaller child in a light-colored smock stands on the gravelly ground, holding onto the gate’s vertical slats.
