Marlon Brando came to Bandol, a small town near Toulon, to visit his fiancée Josanne Mariani-Bérenger, daughter of a fisherman. Brando liked Bandol, as nobody really knew who he was. At first he refused to be photographed, but later he came out for a walk along the harbor and even smiled when he saw the photographer. Brando announced his engagement to the press, however the love affair ended abruptly when he returned to America. Bandol 1954.
This contact sheet from 1954 documents Marlon Brando’s visit to his fiancée, Josanne Mariani-Bérenger, in her hometown of Bandol, France. The twelve candid frames, some marked with a red grease pencil, capture the couple’s relaxed intimacy as they stroll along the harbor. Brando, in a classic Breton striped shirt, and Mariani-Bérenger, daughter of a local fisherman, share affectionate moments. Though he would announce their engagement to the press, the romance ended abruptly upon his return to America.
