Marlon Brando came to Bandol, a small town near Toulon, to visit his fiancée Josanne Mariani-Bérenger, daughter of a fisherman. Brando liked Bandol, as nobody really knew who he was. At first he refused to be photographed, but later he came out for a walk along the harbor and even smiled when he saw the photographer. Brando announced his engagement to the press, however the love affair ended abruptly when he returned to America. Bandol 1954.
A contact sheet of five 35mm film strips documents Marlon Brando’s 1954 visit to Bandol, France, to see his fiancée, Josanne Mariani-Bérenger. Marked with the photographer's selections in red grease pencil, the frames capture the visit's contrasting moods: the chaos of Brando being carried through a crowd of photographers, and quieter moments of him conversing on the seaside promenade or standing with Mariani-Bérenger by the harbor. Though Brando announced their engagement to the press during this trip, the affair ended abruptly upon his return to America.
