Marlon Brando came to Bandol, a small town near Toulon, to visit his fiancée Josanne Mariani-Bérenger, daughter of a fisherman. Brando liked Bandol, as nobody really knew who he was. At first he refused to be photographed, but later he came out for a walk along the harbor and even smiled when he saw the photographer. Brando announced his engagement to the press, however the love affair ended abruptly when he returned to America. Bandol 1954.
This contact sheet documents Marlon Brando’s 1954 visit to Bandol, a small fishing town where he visited his fiancée, Josanne Mariani-Bérenger. Initially enjoying his anonymity, Brando is captured here in a series of candid moments along the harbor. The twelve frames show the actor, dressed in a dark blazer, walking the promenade, crouching beside fishermen as they mend their nets, and standing near a boat named "LOUIS-MARIE." Frames marked with a red grease pencil indicate selected shots from the photojournalistic sequence.
